Singapore Dance Lab da:ns lab 2020 - Co-immunity: How to Dance When We Are All Ill

Founded by Singaporean artist - Daniel Kok, da:ns lab was forced online in 2020 by the Covid-19 pandemic. The six regional clusters across Hong Kong, Manila, New Delhi, Singapore, Sydney, and Taipei explored the transformative relationship between modern body expressions and engagement in interactions.
The Taiwan Team, with artist Huang Ding Yun serving as the curator, employs bioart, online media, video works, and other diverse creative practices in an attempt to explore the dancing body and performance art beyond the paradigm exchanges of dance to then realize various aspects and media. In the online forum experiment, the Taiwan Team challenged other clusters on the preconceptions often assumed of the body and to consider the potential shifts in performances, the virtual world, and sociability. In the paradigm of illness, performing arts must expand their use of online media to adjust their performances and content as well as reconsider alternatives to offline performances, production, and collaboration. By looking into how the term "body" is conceptualized by digitalization, biomedical sciences, political sociology, gender issues, and regulations, we can construct an imaginative future for body performances outside of the existing framework surrounding dance performances.
Huang Ding Yun
Huang Ding Yun is one of the co-founders of the Taipei-based multi-creator collective, Co-Coism. Alongside Henry Tan, a Thai artist, Huang previously served as guest curator for Asia Discovers Asia Meeting for Contemporary Performance (ADAM) in 2018, which focused on the "meaning of performativity at different levels."
Daniel Kok
Daniel Kok is the artistic director of Dance Nucleus, a space for independent dance in Singapore. Kok curates the annual da:ns lab at Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay and is a core member of the Asia Network for Dance (AND+).
