Voices in Motion: Tembang Pantura @ Cijing Kaohsiung
Ang Wang d.k.k.
Coming from the villages of Pantura, the north coast of Java, Indonesia, most of the fishers in Taiwan's ports grew up in the rural areas of the Java coastline. From the time the young fishers rehearsal with friends in hometown, all the way to the time they migrated across the country as adults. Their journey on the sea is always accompanied by music.
In the major ports in southern Taiwan, you can hear Indonesian fishers-whether working offshore or distant water fishing-singing with their guitars on the dockside or the boats, and some even form bands. You can also listen to melodies from Pantura in the seafarers' bars in the nearby big cities. The songs made by fishers are carried with the music scene and memories from their hometowns, and tell the story of hardship and longing at sea.
