2019 Asian Art Biennial x Singapore Biennale Screening & Panel
During the 2019 Asian Art Biennial: The Strangers from beyond the Mountain and the Sea, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts screened video works presented at the Asian Art Biennial and Singapore Biennale 2019 in conjunction with the Singapore Biennale 2019. Lectures and post-screening panels with artists and curators were also held in Singapore and Taiwan.
Karolina Bregula's Square, Miljohn Rupert's Ordinal SW/NE, Hsu Chia-Wei's Stones and Elephants, and Vong Phaophanit & Claire Oboussier's Never real historians, always near poets were screened in Taiwan at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts on December 22nd, 2019. Following the screening, panels were held with Patrick D. Flores, Anca Verona Mihulet, Vipash Purichanont, and Ho Tzu Nyen. In Singapore, Chaong Wen-Ting's Virgin Land, Liu Chuang's Bitcoin Mining and Field Recordings of Ethnic Minorities, Ming Wong's Bloody Marys—Song of the South Seas and Tales of the Bamboo Spaceship, Liu Yu's Salvation Mountain, Park Chan-Kyong's Chun-sang-yeol-cha-bun-ya-jido and Night Fishing, Yuchiro Tamura's Milky Bay, and Wang Hong-Kai's lecture-performance - "This is No Country Music" was screened between February 1-2, 2020 at the Singapore National Gallery alongside panel discussions with Shabbir Hussain Mustafa (Senior Curator at the National Gallery Singapore), Lisa Horikawa, Goh Sze Ying, and Kenneth Tay. The project was a strategic move to drive collaboration between major art institutes in Asia to expand and strengthen the real connection across Asia's art network with the ultimate objective of facilitating mutual understanding towards the landscape of art development in Asia. As such, Taiwan attempts to exchange cultural scenarios with other Asian countries and connect biennials for greater visibility on the global stage.
National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts was established in 1988 and specializes in collecting and researching modern Taiwanese art. The Museum's Asian Art Biennial continues to research and explore the aesthetic value of contemporary Asian art.
Singapore Biennale
The Singapore Biennale is a biennial on contemporary arts organized by the National Gallery of Singapore per the commission of the National Arts Council. Singapore Biennale returned for its 6th edition in 2019, with 77 artists and art collectives from 36 countries. Titled Every Step in the Right Direction, the international contemporary art exhibition invites participation through the act of artistic exploration, drawing on the importance of making choices and taking steps to consider current conditions and the human endeavor for change.
